Friday Fun: Owl Butt!

That got your attention, I hope!

Those of you who are my Facebook friends might have already seen this, but I thought I'd share it with the rest of you and also provide the back story because I'm still amused by it.

Anna used to have nighttime pull-ups with owls on them. They had princesses too, but some had owls and moons on the butt. Every night, she would go through the stack and pick out the owl ones. When we would eventually run out and were left with princesses, she would whine and say, "I wanna be owl butt!" Unfortunately, for some reason, I can no longer find those pull-ups, so we've settled for Cinderella ones.

Friday Fun: Little Picassos!

The other day while dropping Anna off at day care, I had the pleasure of spending some time with her little friends as well. They are such adorable kids! Anna decided she wanted to draw me a picture to bring to work, and then a little boy walked up to me and gave me a picture he had just drawn and said, "This is for you, too!" (I know the names of everyone in Anna's class but I don't publish them without talking to their parents first so we'll keep them anonymous this time.)

Photo of the Week: Art Is All Around Us

Happy Monday!  I'm just recovering from a whirlwind weekend trip to visit Uncle Keith - sans the Pie - which included spending a lovely Saturday afternoon in NYC, strolling around Greenwich Village.

New York, of course, is home to some of the most famous and impressive art museums and collections in the world.  I'm sad to say I haven't been to most of the museums I'd like to visit, and that is definitely on my "bucket list."  But one of the amazing things about New York City is that, if you just look around, you realize that art is everywhere.

And I'm not just talking about the art that's for sale on city sidewalks, either. This week's featured photo is an awesome mosaic from a wall I passed exiting the subway.

I wish my iPhone camera, good as it is, could do this justice. It was created by a woman in 1994 and took approximately a year to make, using stone and glass.  This was a painstaking labor of love and I cannot imagine the patience and talent it must have taken to capture such detail in a mosaic made of tiny pieces.

We saw lots of cool things this weekend, but this was one of the only photos I took because it really impressed me. I can't wait to go back and see what else awaits!

Friday Fun: Our Little Picasso!

One of my favorite things to do with Anna is art projects. I love watching her draw, attempt to write letters, color, paint, make collages, etc.

Recently she discovered watercolor painting for the first time. We had a blast with it!  Check out the flip book below:

Photo of the Week: The Great Wave

I was really happy that among Anna's (too many) birthday gifts were some new art supplies! We had the kids make sock puppets at her birthday party, which seemed to be a hit. Anna also got a coloring book, some sketch pads, clay with cutters to make shapes, Play-Doh "tools" and watercolor paints.

Evidence of Love

I have a “thought for the day” type of calendar on my desk at work.  Heidi gave it to me for Christmas and I look forward to checking it out every day. Sometimes there are things I’ve thought of already, sometimes it’s a tad preachy for my taste (especially first thing in the morning, pre-coffee!), and then sometimes there’s something that really resonates with me.

Today’s calendar thought was about “evidence of love,” and it’s certainly the latter type of entry. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that mean the most, and I appreciate reminders to stop and examine things in a new way.

You Know You're Tired When....

I'm used to being tired all the time. It comes with the territory. What bugs me is feeling that hard-to-shake, fuzzy-headedness first thing in the morning, when I just feel like I can't get going. Because Anna is usually going at full tilt in about 30 seconds.

So, I wasn't quite awake when Anna asked me to draw an octopus for her the other day before school.  This is what she got:

Yes, that's right, it has eleven arms. I even took the time to draw the little suction things on the bottom of the arms, I was that alert....yet somehow I didn't realize that I drew 3 too many arms. My little freak of nature is now proudly hanging out on the fridge next to Anna's art.

This is why I'm not quitting my day job!
