When you carefully examine this diagram of the toddler brain, which is dead-on, many things will make sense to you, and you'll laugh too.

Doctor's Orders

"Take some aspirin and call me in the morning."  Okay, so this is a seriously simplified example of them, but we've all received directions from our physicians at one time or another:  rest up, take medicine, no heavy lifting, etc.

Recently, I sprained my ankle.  Badly.  I'm grateful I didn't break it, but it hurts a lot nonetheless.

Be Prepared, Not Scared

I'm writing late on Sunday night, when weather conditions here are mercifully a lot calmer than I thought they'd be.  We were lucky not to feel much of Hurricane Irene's wrath, but many of my friends and relatives in other states weren't so lucky, with power outages and property damage and many other inconveniences.

Gearing up for this storm, I felt prepared on most basic levels, but found it difficult to prepare Anna for what potentially could be a scary experience.  Granted, the toddler level of understanding is evolving, but limited, so there was only so much I could say to help her know what to expect without freaking out.

Control Freak

Control.  It’s a powerful word.  We try to have self-control.  We wish we had control of certain situations so we wouldn’t feel vulnerable.  We can’t control the future so we feel a little helpless sometimes.  Efforts to control other people are often futile, for good reason.

So why are we surprised that our kids care so much about control?
