I'm a good man, with a good heart,
had a tough time, got a rough start,
But I finally learned to let it go,
Now I'm right here, and I'm right now,
And I'm open, knowing somehow
That my shadow days are over,
My shadow days are over now.
--John Mayer, "Shadow Days"
This is sort of an epilogue to my two recent posts entitled "Are We Really Born This Way?" If you missed them, please check them out here (Part 1) and here (Part 2).
First, I want to thank everyone who commented on the blog and on Facebook for your support and your kind, loving words. That affirmation means the world to me.
Second, I hope that I made some people think, whether they agree with me or not, about the amazing effects of words and support. Just showing unconditional love to someone you care about who is going what I went through is the best gift you can give. You may not understand or approve, but you can love. For your kids' sake - you must.
Of course, a lot of life has happened for me since I finally came to accept myself as I am. I've developed a career as a lawyer, I built a life with my partner, I am raising Anna. All of those are wonderful things. Better things than I ever could've dreamed of during my turbulent teenage years.
But life has continued to throw me curveballs as well. In these past few years, I've dealt with a lot of challenges, financial, personal, emotional, you name it. But what I went through with coming to terms with my sexual orientation taught me this - I can handle anything. I am strong. I am brave. I am worth it.
If you're where I used to be - reread those words to yourself, all the time. I can handle anything. I am strong. I am brave. I am worth it. And also - I am loved. You are, more than you know.
If you have a coming out story to share, or a story about your own "shadow days" that you endured and have come out on the other side stronger and wiser and happier....tell us. Share it in the comments or contact us at mylifewithpie@gmail.com if you'd like to do a guest post. We would love to hear from you!
