Halloween Recap

Good morning!  Who's tired from a night full of canvassing neighborhoods with adorable costumed kids in tow?  I know I am.

But it's worth it for the glee on little faces as they yell "trick-or-treat!" and the joy in their steps as they carry plastic orange pumpkin buckets full of candy. Anna (aka Ord the dragon) had a blast trick-or-treating with her friends Jacobi (aka Curious George) and Izzy B (aka The Princess of Color and Everything).

"Hurry up so I can have my candy!"

My favorite thing was watching Anna sprint to the doors.  After tentatively approaching the first few houses and thinking she didn't get much candy, it suddenly hit her that you got candy at every house...and there were a lot more houses to go!

Izzy & Anna anxiously awaiting treats....

That's when she began racing from house to house, dragon tail swishing behind her, trying to be first in line for candy, as if the magic supply would soon run out. She'd come away holding a piece of candy high in the air and saying, "Look, guys! I got a treat!" as if it was the best surprise ever.

On to the next one, guys!

And then, one glorious house had Anna's very favorite candy - M&Ms (for those who don't know, pronounced "nems n nems").  Once she realized there may be M&Ms out there, she stopped saying trick or treat and started asking at each house whether they had any nems n nems. It was hilarious.

Occasionally, there would be disappointment if there were no M&Ms, but usually, Anna would be content with whatever she got - even if she wasn't sure what it was. "Look!! I got a......what is it?"

By the end of the night, all 3 kids were content to call it quits and come back to the house to enjoy some treats.

Anna & Jacobi enjoying popcorn!

I hope all of you had a great time with your kids last night. Please feel free to share funny stories and pics!

  1. Awww...so sweet! Sounds like a success!! Lauren enjoyed trick or treating this year, really she was too young last year. Her Dad took her, but it was so much fun when she came home and her discovering her collection of candy. She, being so very social unlike me, then ran to the door for later trick or treaters and yelled "bye bye!!!!!". Then we read her national geographic happy Halloween book one last time. Time to look forward to thanksgiving now.....going to try to teach her the concept of being thankful....might do some sort of thankful tree or something and try to think of something each day......maybe?????? How exhilarating is this gift/job of parenting! We went to a retirement home today too...I think next year, we will try to make little gifts to bring....such an amazing experience to share time with elderly people! It was a friend's idea...but we might make it a tradition!

  3. That sounds like a wonderful tradition! It's so fun teaching kids about the holidays and seeing what special things are their favorites. I want to teach Anna about being thankful too. I often tell her we're very lucky and that it's nice to help other people.  We often go to Goodwill for random stuff, including toys, and I am trying to get her to the point where she will give away some of her things too instead of just wanting to buy things. It's hard when they are in the toddler "it's mine!" phase - she doesn't even like giving away clothes that don't fit anymore even when she knows she can't wear them (so the Excess Toy Fairy sneaks in at night and removes them from time to time).

Hey, I think you've given me a good idea for a post - thanks!!

  4. I absolutely adored how Anna had to show ALL of us what she got from every house before she put it in her bucket!  I hope the girls are less competitive next year  Maybe next year we could have a pre T or T-ing reminder of the rules pow-wow!  Although I must say part of me loves how determined both of our girls can be.... there are worse qualities to have!   The older girls Kelsey and Ceyanne have absolutely thrived due to some of that same determination.

  5. Exactly! I try to remind myself when I feel stressed that the things that are a little rough now could turn out to be very good things later.  I'm glad we've started the tradition of trick or treating together!

It cracked me up when Anna would try to show us her stuff but didn't know what it was. I'm glad she was still (mostly) happy even when she didn't know. :)
