Those of you who are my Facebook friends might have already seen this, but I thought I'd share it with the rest of you and also provide the back story because I'm still amused by it.
Anna used to have nighttime pull-ups with owls on them. They had princesses too, but some had owls and moons on the butt. Every night, she would go through the stack and pick out the owl ones. When we would eventually run out and were left with princesses, she would whine and say, "I wanna be owl butt!" Unfortunately, for some reason, I can no longer find those pull-ups, so we've settled for Cinderella ones.
The other night, as I was changing over my wardrobe to spring and summer stuff, I found these lightweight pajama pants with owls and moons on them. Now, I usually sleep in sweats or shorts, so buying these pants was a bit out of the ordinary for me. But for some reason, I got them. They were probably on clearance at TJ Maxx, making them automatically irresistible to me.
My pants |
Predictably, as soon as Anna saw them, she started talking about wanting to be "owl butt" again and wanting to wear my pants. "Honey, they are way too big for you," I said. She pouted. "Then I want my own to sleep in!" I frowned sympathetically. "I'm sorry, honey, but you don't have any owl pants. We will have to look for some at the store." Further pouting ensued.
And then a little light bulb went off in my head.
"Honey," I said, "How would you like me to make you some owl pants? You have two pairs of gray sweats. I could draw an owl on one pair."
"Okay!" Anna replied enthusiastically.
"Now, you have to be sure that you want me to do this. Once I use a marker on your pants, it won't come off like the ones at school. So you can't freak out and change your mind after I draw it," I warned.
"Do it! Do it!" she cheered.
And I did. I drew a practice owl on a piece of paper, using my pants as a model, and then carefully drew one on her pants with a Sharpie. This was the result:

Anna's pants! |
Now, I'm no Picasso....heck, I'm not even on the level of a first-year Art student. But I was ridiculously proud of my handiwork. I showed it to the fam and put it on FB. And, more importantly, Anna loved them and slept in them. I am now contemplating buying plain white t-shirts and drawing on them as a random project for my copious spare time. It's cheaper than buying character clothes and more fun too.
Except for the problem of my art not being nearly as nice as the printed, professional version, but whatever.
What kinds of quick creative "fixes" have you come up with for your kids? Do you have a similar story? If so, please share it in the comments.
Have a happy Friday!
